AbstractThis article documents the impacts of the La Niña events on the weather and climate in the different regions of Brazil. Based on the analysis of previous events from the last 40 years, it has been observed that even though the tropical Pacific shows cooling on its surface waters, the degree of cooling varies from event to event, with the largest cooling in 1988/89. In the meanwhile, the tropical Atlantic does not follow a consistent pattern of anomalies in every La Niña events, and that is why the impacts of this phenomenon is not as consistent as in the El Nino. In fact, there are La Niña years with dry conditions in southern Brazil, while other do not show that. We present here an assessment of climatic impacts of La Niña in Brazil, with emphasis on rain.
